grass hut by matt sawyer Okay, who's beyond excited summer is finally here? In Colorado it feels like winter lasts an eternity, then suddenly - warmth! Sun! Happiness!

These photos by Matt Sawyer capture that summer feeling so well. Sun-drenched beaches, the open road, big skies, the urge to wander and explore... yep. It's all here. Who's ready for some summer adventures? (Me, me!)

hwy 64 by matt sawyer

I'll be road-tripping to visit some friends next month and I CAN'T WAIT to see this photo for reals. Is there anything more freeing than the open road?

I came across Matt's work on my girl Artsy Forager's collection for Mantle Art Company. She has SUCH a great eye for amazing artwork. I loved each piece she picked... but the summer vibes of Matt's photos tipped the scales to full on ART CRUSH.

Matt is an analogue fine art photographer based in Seattle. He's been called "a master of atmosphere, the simplest subject caught in his lens becomes filled with meaning and drama." I couldn't agree more.

swimming_pools water-slides

Oh guys, Jenny Odell had me at 125 Swimming Pools.

Jenny's series of satellite prints show a collection of things - swimming pools, trains, ponds - cut out from Google Satellite View. While they're all pretty uh-mazing (see the whole series here!), these two jumped out at me.

I think it's because I'm already dreaming of summer and would like very much to swim in 125 swimming pools and ride down 10 different water slide configurations... et tu?

Line, texture, fields of color, spatial relationships. Oh I love a good Ab Ex-inspired painting.

Lana says she's influenced by Abstract Expressionist painters like Robert Motherwell, Franz Kline, and Mark Rothko. She even lays her canvas on a flat surface to work! Very Jackson Pollock... but way cooler because she uses a contemporary palette to die for.

Art. Crush. Which one is your favorite?

valentine's wishlist I luuurve this print Sweethearts by Jonathan Lewis. It's from Jonathan's series See Candy, where he takes inspiration from the colors and tones of the candy section of the supermarket. I never realized just how many colors can appear on candy packaging! Kind of amazing, right?

Wouldn't those colors make the cutest Valentine's Day outfit?? My research points to YES.

paper planes paper butterflies

jumping rope

infinity dashes

Guys. How awesome are these photos?? I found them during my (daily) perusal of Saatchi Online. That combination of graphic lines, beautiful photographs, and bright bursts of color will get me EVERY TIME.

Plus I love the surreal quality of each work. The juxtaposition between the bright paper and the dying plants, or the way the drawing interacts with the photo, definitely makes you stop and look. So wonderfully strange, don't you think?

On another note, maybe I should decorate my entire office with vibrant paper planes today...

jump for joy by kelly nicolaisen I've mentioned Kelly's work once before on the ol' blog. It's time for an official declaration of her awesomeness... a.k.a. an Art Crush post.

I'm obsessed with Kelly's playful style. I totally want to be one of the characters in her photos... or, ya know, start taking crazy awesome selfies.

ice cream by max wanger Oh friends. Love at first sight totally exists. I know because I fell in lurrrve with these Max Wanger prints THE MOMENT I saw them. Fact.

Looking for the right artwork is totally like looking for the right relationship. When it's right, you just know. You don't have to talk yourself into it. It doesn't matter what your friends or family think. There aren't any doubts or questions. Your heart is happy and that's all that matters.

Now which one to pick... which one is your favorite?

What's that? I should get all 3? Wellll okay.

red lollipop After a rather stressful month of searching for a new home, we finally found a place!! Woot! Get out the champagne and the cardboard boxes, we're moving to a house! Peace out, townhome.

While we're a little farther from the Denver action than I'd like to be, we do have a lot more space, which means more wall space... which means more room for artwork!

I luurrve this print by Rosha Nutt. I've always been a fan of Ben-Day dots. Plus, a screenprint of a popsicle? You just can't go wrong. Definitely an art crush and a candidate for our new kitchen.

imaginary friends by naomi vona Naomi emailed me a few weeks ago introducing me to her work. Guys. INSTANT CRUSH. I'm a sucker for collage. I'm tellin' ya, collage is in right now...

smokey eyes by naomi vona

Naomi is an Italian artist who lives in Dublin, Ireland. She creates new interpretations of vintage photos using pens, paper, colored tape, and stickers.

a forest by naomi vona

I love the juxtaposition (yay art history jargon!) of the drab & dingy vintage photos with such bright bold colors. The bursts of color add so much life to the photos, don't you think? Plus, the way Naomi applies these colorful additions gives each photo a whole new abstract story. The original photo is completely transformed and made anew.

What do you think? Do you have an art crush on Naomi's collages, too? So awesome, right?

by Kate Donaldson We're doing things a little differently on today's Art Crush! This time I had the opportunity to actually take some photos with my art crush. The print? Here? I was so excited... and when I told Kate Donaldson, favorite friend and talented photographer, about the whole idea? Well. The creativity and awesomeness went up a few hundred notches.

by Kate Donaldson by Kate Donaldson

The artist: Kayla King. The art crush: Two Villages and the Little Bear.

I absolutely love this print. The graphic patterning, the simple use of color, the fun title that turns it into a story. It's so thoughtfully designed. Plus there's something so mysterious about it. It completely sucks me in. I feel like, maybe if I look at it long enough, I'll find a hidden clue and decipher its meaning.

by Kate Donaldson

Kate had the idea to do a series of multiple exposure shots. Totally captures that same thoughtful yet mysterious vibe, don't you think?

Taking photos with my art crush was such a blast. I'm so excited to add this print to my collection! I've gotta say, it was really hard to pick only one print. How awesome are these others?

Kayla King is a graphic designer and illustrator based on the Central Coast of California. She loves pens, bright colors, design magazines, growing tomatoes, and snuggling with her two dachshunds. Inspired by nature, her color palettes and illustrations often incorporate elements of the mountains and beach near her home.
