I love searching Pinterest for sparks of inspiration. You know, that moment that stops you mid-scroll and makes you take a closer look. Or better yet - makes you say: Man, I wish I'd thought of that!!

These graphics made me say that. I just love the way they've integrated natural elements. Which one is your favorite?

Are you on pinterest? Let's pin together! Find me here!

HAPPY FOR OCTOBERS

feelin like fall It's sooo fall in Colorado right now. From the sights to the sounds to the smells. All fall.... y'all.

I came across this quote on pinterest yesterday that really stuck with me:

I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.

At first, I thought oh that's kinda clever... then by the end of the day I was IN LOVE with it. Octobers are pretty special, huh? The colors, the crisp + cool weather, the sweaters, the scary movie-athons, the food (aka Halloween treats)! October is the BEST.

I put together a few of my favorite things I wanna try and buy this month. I know, that cocktail isn't very fall... but for some reason drinking wine is more appealing in colder weather. No? Just me? Well alright. Try it anyways, k? It's inspired by Downton Abbey if that helps :)

Happy October to ye.

ART ASSOCIATION CONTEST

kuzana ogg Happy Wednesday, friends. You know what would make this Wednesday even happier? A pinterest contest by the name of Art Association? Yessss. Let's do it.

Here's how it works:

Artsy Forager and I have cooked up one awesome project that involves art, Pinterest, and YOU... Art Association (think word association) involves creating a Pinterest board around one work of art and all of the things you think of while looking at it. Anything and everything that comes to mind will be pinned… no holding back now.

We're doing things a bit differently this time. The winner will be randomly selected. That's right. Artsy Forager and I are staying out of it this time. You pin whatever your heart desires and you'll be entered to win a rad prize and some definite bragging rights. Let’s get started, eh?

This month's inspiration is Lily by Kuzana Ogg...

The fun color palette of Lily made me think of swimming pools, flowers, and pink summery hues... it's finally warming up here in Denver, my mind is clearly occupied with all things summer!

art association contest

Oh I can't wait to see your pins! But before we get to pinning, let's take a look at your prize. Woot!

art association contest

The winner will receive this 5x5" etching, Pom. Two quick + awesome facts about this print: 01. the title means "Spring" in Korean. Kuzana actually lived in Korea in the mid '90s where she taught English. So cool. 02. The print was made at the New Grounds Print Workshop in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Kuzana was awarded their Rachel Allen Scholarship. SO cool.

Okay, let's pin.

ART ASSOCIATION CONTEST

Jessica Brilli I know. Project Brown Bag this morning and now Art Association? I'm gettin' cray up in here. Let's keep the good times rolling, shall we?

This month Artsy Forager and I teamed up with the incredible artist Jessica Brilli. When I saw her portfolio, I knew I wanted to work with her on an Art Association contest... I mean, how many fun images and ideas come to mind when you see old school telephones, cameras, and typewriters? These objects have so much history, I have a feeling this round of Art Association is gonna be our best yet...!

Before we get to the rules + your awesome prize, here's what I saw when I looked at Jessica's painting of a Brownie Camera. Clearly I thought of real brownies... with salted caramel creme filling. I also thought of other old school objects, that rich yellow color, and fun photos + snapshots. Oh you guys are gonna have fun with this one.

ART ASSOCIATION + CONTEST

Really looking at artwork and interpreting it for myself, without any research or supplemental materials, feels strangely unnatural. Grad school basically tells you, you can't create your own valid opinion about a work of art without support from other scholars and factual evidence... sighhh. Way to ruin the fun, grad school.

In the name of MORE FUN, Artsy Forager and I have cooked up one awesome project that involves art, Pinterest, and YOU... we're like arty mad scientists over here. Art Association (think word association) involves creating a Pinterest board around one work of art and all of the things you think of while looking at it. Anything and everything that comes to mind will be pinned... no holding back and no grad school judgment. This month we're looking at Laura Newman's Rorschach... and let me tell you, it's fascinating what I started associating after really looking... I mean, you guys see two people blowing bubbles at each other too, right? No? I'm a bit sleep-deprived...

L A U R A  N E W M A N  :  R O R S C H A C H

So what did I see?? The way Newman's bright colors spread across the image reminded me of open spaces, where land, sea, and sky come together. The graphic black lines made me think of closed spaces like art galleries with sharp, angled walls. After more looking, maybe too much looking, the way the different colors mix together reminded me of people hugging (or blowing bubbles at each other apparently)... and of course the colors immediately made me think of rainbow cake.

T H E  P I N S

BUT WAIT, I'm saving the best for last... Artsy Forager and I are inviting you to participate too!! Create your own Pinterest board based on Laura Newman's Rorschach for a chance to win one month of free BOSS ad space on artsocial. This top spot gets you shout outs on twitter, facebook, and a spotlight post all about you, Boss. At 200x400 pixels, you're blog, shop, or biz will get some pretty rad (and much deserved) exposure. Let's showcase your awesomeness, huh?

- Follow artsocial and Artsy Forager on Pinterest (if you already follow us, you're in bro).

- Create a Pinterest board titled Art Association.

- Pin Laura Newman's Rorschach along with anything and everything that you think of when looking at Newman's work.

- Leave the link to your pinboard in the comments section of this post.

Done-zo. The pinner with the best art associations (as judged by me and Artsy Forager) will be chosen on Wednesday, September 26th at 5pm (mountain standard time). Cannot wait to see what you guys come up with!! Get creative with it, friends... unlike grad school, there are no wrong answers.

Would you like your artwork to be featured as an Art Association subject? Aww yeeahh... email artsocialonline@gmail.com for more info.

The Pinterest Project: Collections + Cupcakes

I'm basically on Pinterest all day... and Google Reader.. and Gchat. But that's for a different post. At various (aka frequent) times throughout the day at my job, I'll take a Pinterest break (aka pretending to work whilst pinning from tumblrs). It's healthy to take breaks, right? Pinterest is like my visual calisthenics...

Anyhoooo, are you on Pinterest? Everyone and their goldfish is joining Pinterest... but how do you use it? Lately I've heard a lot of people say they like the idea of Pinterest, but they aren't really sure what to do with it. While I use it to pin the images I want to use on this here blog, I can see how others might have a cool-but-what-do-I-do-with-you-Pinterest kind of attitude (longest hyphenation ever)...virtual pinboard? What if I've never even had a non-virtual pinboard? It's ok, you don't need one...

We know Pinterest is all about bookmarking your favorite internet finds... but what if we could bookmark/pin together? Ya know like a big virtual scrapbooking party. I remember my old college roommate would have scrapbooking parties and I wasn't cool enough (or maybe too cool) to be invited...

So here's what I propose: for the next month, let's pin to this board. In order to be added to the board as a contributor all you have to do is comment on one of the pins. Easy as pie... or cupcakes. This month's topic: collections and cupcakes, which means pin anything and everything collections or cupcake related. Annnnd the best pins will be featured on the blog each week - yay!

Pinners, let's do this.

Pinned and 'Grammed

Holy mid-May, it's almost summer guys! Even Mondays are a little happier this time of year. This weekend roundup is dedicated to you, summer. Let's have a drink and get our tan on real soon, ok? And by "get our tan on" I mean wear 85 spf and hang out in the shade. I'm of Irish descent, 'nuff said.

1. This weekend started with a Negra Modelo and the boyfriend making chicken tacos. Feels like summer and tastes like summer. Aww yeeah.

2. So I don't have a garden and I can barely keep houseplants alive - srsly, I somehow killed my diy terrarium... I thought those things were basically self-sustaining? But it's spring-ish summer, I'd like to have some plants around. SO, I think maybe, just maybe, even I could keep this ball of moss in an apothecary jar alive... by Pink Serissa.

3. I'm determined to get my apartment fully decorated by the end of the summer. I know, that's a long time. Decorating gives me anxiety... so I'm taking baby steps. One piece of artwork each week until every room looks awesome. Here's my second purchase, Catloaf by Jen Ray (and here's my first).  Of course I Googled "catloaf" and discovered that it's actually a legit term used to describe a cat sitting with all four paws tucked under its body... you know, as legit as urban dictionary gets anyways. I encourage you to Google too, let's get weird.

4. Hoorah for summer movies. How rad is this retro-style movie poster for Inception? These others aren't too shabby either...

5. The weekend started a little early this week with the celebration of miss Kate Donaldson's birthday. With fruit/slurpee/tequila/champagne cocktails on the patio and a cake illustrating the timeless debate bear vs. shark, the night ranked high on the awesomeness scale.

6. In honor of future summer patio celebrations, I started looking for a new drink with the right amount of sweetness and booziness (and maybe a little less slurpee). Well call off the search. Meet the blackberry smash.

7. My all time favorite instagrammer is Chicago-based photographer Paul Octavious. He does a 'gram series of the same hill - or to put it in instagram terms #samehilldifferentday. This Saturday it was all about kite flyin'... awesome. Follow this man: @pauloctavious. Oh and he has an adorable dog named Gizmo who makes frequent instagram appearances.

8. Here's to more picnicking this summer. Who's with me? Image found here.

9. With a name like Sweet Action and flavors like Colorado margarita, chocolate andes mint, chai (!!), and salted butterscotch, this little ice cream shop is a must for summer. If you're in Denver, go immediately.

More fun than Monet

As an art history major, I did a lot of compare and contrast essays in college and grad school. Look for the similarities, look for the differences. Boom. Compare/contrast essay. Nothing against the classic art faves, but it's way more fun to compare/contrast images from my Pinterest boards.
