SECRETS OF A BIZ OWNER 06

Ch-ch-ch-changes. Oh yeah. If you're an entrepreneur, things will always be changing. You'll change your mind, your tagline, your main offer, all your offers, your social media handles, your entire business.

And it doesn't mean you're a flake. It means you're evolving. It means you're paying attention to those whispers that say this isn't working anymore so it's time to try that.

You HAVE TO change as your business grows, as you grow. If you hang onto ideas or plans that just. aren't. working. simply because that's what you set out to do, you're gonna be miserable. FACT.

I remember feeling like a total flake when I decided "oh wait, actually I don't want to be a pro blogger like I declared 6 months ago, I want to be a graphic designer."

Oh my gosh, I could feel the eye rolls from certain folks and their inner dialogue "I wonder what she'll be up to next week..."

But guess what? Who cares. People probably didn't even think that - and if they did? WHO CARES. I knew what I needed to do.

Secret bottom line: you KNOW what you need to do. Don't be afraid to make changes. It's the only way you're gonna get to where you really wanna be.

SECRETS OF A BIZ OWNER 05

secrets of a biz owner

Ugh. Guys. This one's tough. If it were up to me I'd know everything always so I could prepare accordingly. That's reasonable, right? Ha! That's impossible. In life and business.

As an in-house designer for small biz owners, I never really know at the beginning of each month how many projects I'll work on. Sure, I know what our retainer is and how much work that usually entails. But there are always surprises, extra projects, and sometimes no projects.

Projects ebb and flow. And to be super honest, the ebbs make me really nervous sometimes! But it always works out. There are slow times and I'm learning to enjoy them, to take advantage of a free afternoon instead of worrying about what's to come. Because more will come. It always does.

Secret bottom line? There are certain areas of your business you'll never be able to control. The sooner you accept that and dance with it, the better. You can never say for sure how many projects you'll work on in a month or how well your new program is going to sell or whether or not your online shop will become decorated with lovely sold out signs.

At the end of the day, all you can do is keep going. Create work you believe in and enjoy this crazy amazing freelance / entrepreneur lifestyle. Don't let the unknowns freak you out.

BEFORE THE DESIGN BEGINS

before-the-design

Designing a new logo or website for your business is hands down one of the most exciting processes you'll ever go through as an online entrepreneur. Ya know, other than your first sale, your next sale - okay all the sales - and always having the freedom to take a nap after lunch. Cuz you CAN. Although I'm 3 years in and I never have! I'm such a mean boss...

While the design process is super exciting, there are two very key elements that must be worked out before the designing ever begins; before the pixels hit the page - ha! If the following puzzle pieces are in place for your business, the design process will be pure. magic.

Your WHAT: get clear on your vision for your business.

What is your dream for your business? Knowing what you do and how you want to turn your ideas into offerings is huge. I didn't find that clarity for a good 2 years into my business. I took the very organic, it'll-find-me route...

Your WHY: clearly define your brand.

What's your mission statement? What are your values? How are you doing it differently than the other guys? After you pinpoint your vision and what your business does, it's time to ask how to define your vision so that your ideal clients will take notice.

Knowing the answers to these seemingly simple questions is, well, everything right? Because the info above? Your what and your why? That's what makes your business, your business. It's the heart, the soul, the core. Only then can you tackle the HOW - the design and the website - in a way that truly resonates with you and that sweet, sweet biz of yours.

Boom shakalaka(the sound awesome design makes).

xoxo,
Erin

SOMETHING NEW. JUST FOR YOU.

artsocial-studio Since leaving my "real" job last November, I feel like I've been in figuring it all out mode. That can be a stressful mode, y'all. Lots of doubt and questions and what ifs. But there's also something really great about that mode... if you follow your instincts, it will ALWAYS lead you to the right thing. Promise.

Ever since I started working for Tiffany Han as her blog manager - designing graphics for her blog, banners for her new programs, and doing the occasional glitter photo shoot (obvi) - I found myself thinking: Omigosh this is freaking awesome. Could I do this full-time? For a living??

My answer: hells to the yeah! I'm SO excited to announce I'm officially offering graphic design services. If you're a small business owner or blogger looking for a graphic designer to help with your biz - on projects big and small - well here I am! Let's get started. It'll be like having your very own graphic designer on staff... awesome, right?

So take a look-see at my new work with me page and portfolio... then contact me asap, k? Because my services often turn into ongoing / long-term projects, I only have a couple spots open!
