secrets of a biz owner

Ugh. Guys. This one's tough. If it were up to me I'd know everything always so I could prepare accordingly. That's reasonable, right? Ha! That's impossible. In life and business.

As an in-house designer for small biz owners, I never really know at the beginning of each month how many projects I'll work on. Sure, I know what our retainer is and how much work that usually entails. But there are always surprises, extra projects, and sometimes no projects.

Projects ebb and flow. And to be super honest, the ebbs make me really nervous sometimes! But it always works out. There are slow times and I'm learning to enjoy them, to take advantage of a free afternoon instead of worrying about what's to come. Because more will come. It always does.

Secret bottom line? There are certain areas of your business you'll never be able to control. The sooner you accept that and dance with it, the better. You can never say for sure how many projects you'll work on in a month or how well your new program is going to sell or whether or not your online shop will become decorated with lovely sold out signs.

At the end of the day, all you can do is keep going. Create work you believe in and enjoy this crazy amazing freelance / entrepreneur lifestyle. Don't let the unknowns freak you out.

BB MID HEEL, DOLLY GOLD With 2013 coming up, I've been planning like a mofo... plus I'm really excited about my new planner. As I started mapping out the next couple of months, I realized how much I don't have planned... how much I really can't plan. Will this sponsor say yes? Should I really launch this program? What will I be doing in June?

Does this freak me out? Yup. Sure does. But I came across something the other day that was life-changing... and I'm not even trying to be dramatic. I read something that I'm going to repeat to myself in the coming months until every cell of my body gets it...

When you experience uncertainty, you are on the right path - so don't give up. You don't need to have a complete or rigid idea of what you'll be doing next week or next year, because if you have a very clear idea of what's going to happen and you get rigidly attached to it, then you shut out a whole range of possibilities.

Is your mind blown? Mine sure was. I've never thought of uncertainty this way. I've always operated under the assumption I had to have everything figured out. Who would have thought NOT having a plan could be the best option. It's okay - better even - to not know.

This does not mean we should forget about our goals. It's important to still have the intention of going in a certain direction. But between point A and point B, there are infinite possibilities. By accepting uncertainty and letting go of trying to control every detail, we open ourselves up to a whole range of exciting possibilities we may never have thought of... well this makes uncertainty sound pretty effing awesome, huh?

I was really comforted by this... et tu?
